Since opening in a historic schoolhouse in 2002, the Ashley Transitional Living Center has helped 41 formerly homeless veterans “find their way back” to sobriety and self-reliance, according to Jane Birnbach, senior development director for Good Shepherd Center, which operates the Ashley program.At any one time, the Ashley Center has 16 veterans, all of them men, in the program. The facility at 2002 Colwell Ave. has individual rooms, each with a bed, dresser and desk. It also has three shared bathrooms, a commercial kitchen, dining room and two lounge areas. It includes TVs, computers and Internet access.
